Train Journeys

As your My Travel Guide we have put together a travel guide all about the train stations and journeys that can be taken within the local area. There is nothing quite like a day out by train. The parking is free at the smaller stations like San Isidro and Balsicas, the tickets are great value and what's more the trains seem to keep to their timetables! Once you are in either of the four cities, there is a short walk to the centre and then you can enjoy all they have to offer. Using the train really takes the stress out of visiting and parking in the cities and offers something different, however driving is quicker and more direct

Alicante Train Station

Parking: you'll be arriving by train so no parking is required!
From here: the train station is opposite the El Corte Ingles department store, right on the edge of the main shopping area, so walk and explore. The start of our Alicante city walking route and the marina are about a 15 minute walk away. Start by walking past the El Corte Ingles along Avda Maisonnave to the other El Corte Ingles store, turn right and walk down the wide Avd Doctor Gadea towards the sea and the famous esplanade with the wave mosaic tiles. Walk along here with the marina on your right towards the Melia Hotel. Our Alicante city waking route starts here.
Balsicas Train Station

Parking: is in the streets around the train station and is free.
From here: enter the train station and purchase your ticket.
Top tip: this train line is used by various regional operators, but you can find the timetable using the Renfe website. Click on the word welcome to change the site to English, then in the drop down menus on the Departure select either Cartagena if you want to go to Murcia or Murcia if you want to go to Cartagena. In the drop down menu for Destination select the station that you are going to, select the date, then click search. To find the time that the train stops at Balsicas click on the train that you want in the Train/Route column and the time table will pop up.
Cartagena Train Station

Parking: you'll be arriving by train so no parking is required!
From here: the train station is opposite the main tourist office and the stop for the Tourist Bus, which operates during the summer only. The start of our Cartagena city walking route and the marina are about a 15 minute walk away. Start by exiting the train station and cross the road to the old city wall. Keeping the wall on your left, follow it and you'll arrive at the marina. Our walking route starts from here.
Elche Train Station

Parking: you'll be arriving by train so no parking is required!
From here: the train station is underground, exit the building and turn left towards the municipal park. Walk through the beautiful municipal palm park towards the tourist office, approximately 500 metres. Our Elche city walking route starts from here.
Los Nietos Train Station

Parking: is in the designated car park area and is free.
From here: there is only one platform as this is the end of the line!
Top tip: the train goes through the Sierra Mineras past La Union to Cartagena City. It runs roughly every 30 minutes from 07.00 to 20.00 Monday-Saturday. The journey to Cartagena takes about half an hour and costs 2.30€ return. For timetables and prices visit the FEVE website. Put Los Nietos (there are 2 other stations in Los Nietos) in the Origen and Cartagena or any other station you want to go to in the Destino. Add the date you want to travel, then press Consultar Horarios for time tables and Consultar Precios for prices.
Murcia Train Station

Parking: you'll be arriving by train so no parking is required!
From here: the train station is a 15 minute walk from the Cathedral and the start of our Murcia city walking route. Leave the train station and walk along the street infront of you until you reach the main road Calle Florida Blanca, turn right and continue straight across the roundabout. Pass the Jardin Florida Blanca park on your right handside heading for the river. Cross the Rio Segura river and then turn right towards the Ayuntamiento (town hall). Orihuela Train Station

Parking: is in the station car park and is charged according to the length of stay, alternatively you can park for free if you can find a space in any side street.
From here: the train goes every hour (more frequently at peak times) south to Murcia or north to Elche and Alicante.

For the quicker medium distance trains which just stop at Murcia, Elche and Alicante the site works using the end stations of each line only, so in this case Murcia and Alicante. In the drop down menus on the Departure select Murcia if you want to go to Elche or Alicante and Alicante if you want to go to Murcia. In the drop down menu for Destination select the end station that you are going to, select the date, then click search. To find the time that the train stops at Orihuela click on the train that you want in the Train/Route column and the time table will pop up.
For the slower local trains which stop at all the stations click on the word Commuter (Cercanias in Spanish) on the left side of the screen underneath the words Products and Services of. Still on the left of the screen click on Murcia/Alicante. In the Departure Point dropdown menu select your departure station, in this case Orihula. In the Destination dropdown menu select the station you are travelling to which will be Murcia, Elche Parque or Alicante. Select the date of travel and then click on search and the timetable will appear. To find the times for the return journey, move your mouse over the words Request Return Times on the Day and once the hand symbol appears click. The Departure Point, Destination and timetable will change to the one for the return journey.
San Isidro Train Station

Parking: is in the station car park beside the main road and is free, or in any of the surrounding streets.
From here: The characterful traditional looking station was demolished during 2011 to make way for the high speed track. During the upgrade work a portacabin is being used as the station office and there is a self service ticket machine.
Top tip: the line is a local train line known as a cercanias, but you can find the timetable using the Renfe website. Click on the word Welcome to change the site to English. On the left side of the screen underneath the words Products and Services of: click on the word Commuter (Cercanias in Spanish). Still on the left of the screen click on Murcia/Alicante. In the Departure Point dropdown menu select your departure station, in this case Albatera-Catral. In the Destination dropdown menu select the station you are travelling to which will be Orihuela, Murcia, Elche Parque or Alicante. Select the date of travel and then click on search and the timetable will appear. To find the times for the return journey, move your mouse over the words Request Return Times on the Day and once the hand symbol appears click. The Departure Point, Destination and timetable will change to the one for the return journey.
