Monteagudo

This lovely statue is one of many places to visit in and around Monteagudo

Monteagudo is a small village with a very big statue!! You can walk through the narrow streets of the village which has just over 2,000 inhabitants up to the base of the statue. From here you get a great view out, over the roof tops of the village and down the valley towards the city of Murcia, and the El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park.

During the 11th century, when the area was under Moorish rule an Islamic castle was built on the rock to help guard the fertile plains of Murcia. When the Moors were expelled the castle and the inhabitants were converted to Christianity. In order to celebrate this, the ‘Christ the Redeemer’ style statue was placed on top of the ruins of the castle in 1926. However it was destroyed during the Spanish civil war, and the one that you can see today was erected in 1951.

Ideas of places to twin Monteagudo with day or night

  • Twin a visit to the out of town shopping malls of the Nueva Condimina, Thader and the massive Ikea with a stop at Monteagudo. You can break up your shopping experience by taking an hour out in the middle of the day to make the 10 minute drive here, and then the 15 minute walk up to the statue. You might prefer to add it on at the beginning or end of the day, or send those who aren’t interested in shopping here whilst you enjoy yourselves at the malls!
  • Spend the day in the city of Murcia. Follow our Murcia city walking route, visit some of its interesting museums, or take a stroll along the banks of the Rio Segura. Then head to Monteagudo to explore the village and walk up to the statue.
  • Get to know all about the El Valle Regional park by visiting the sanctuary and the visitor centres in the morning. Have a picnic in the park and then make the short drive to Monteagudo and climb up to the base of the iconic ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue.
