Day Out Yecla and Vineyards
This day out starts with a coffee stop in the unusual but sweet village of La Romana. It is unusual because the actual layout of the village was planned to be like a grid, so it makes it very easy to explore. It is worth stretching you legs and wandering around the grand village square and the nearby church.
Driving through the ‘huerto’ the Spanish name given to cultivated countryside, passing Monover and Pinoso you’ll see lots of little bodegas, so stop and sample as you wish!! On the outskirts of Yecla is the largest producer of the area called the La Purisina Co-operative bodega. Take time to visit the small shop and try the excellent value locally produced wine (closed during siesta).
Yecla makes a perfect lunch stop for a picnic or restaurant. It has several places of interest but it is lovely to wander up the steep roads, past the impressive churches to soak up the atmosphere of this characterful inland town.
We suggest completing the circular route by returning via the motorway, past the furniture stores, the production of which is the other main industry within the area. Then back to the coast through the Vinalope Valley along the toll free motorway known as the route of the castles.
