The airport is situated 9 kilometres southwest of Alicante City and 10 kilometres east of Elche City. El Altet opened on the 4th May 1967, and in the early 1970s passenger traffic reached 1 million. In 2009 the airport handled about 9,139,600 passengers, 74,280 flights and 3,200 tonnes of cargo.
