Alicante airport, which is also known as El Altet, is the 6th busiest airport in Spain and is the main airport for the Province of Alicante. The airport is situated 9 kilometres southwest of Alicante City and 10 kilometres east of Elche City. El Altet opened on the 4th May 1967, and in the early 1970s passenger traffic reached 1 million. In 2009 the airport handled about 9,139,600 passengers, 74,280 flights and 3,200 tonnes of cargo.

San Javier airport, which is better known as Murcia airport, is situated 17 miles south of the city of Murcia right on the shores of the Mar Menor. It is a military air base which also acts as a passenger airport. Since the 1980's Murica airport has become busier due to the arrival of several low-cost airlines. In 1995 there were about 88,600 passengers, but this jumped to 1,630.675 in 2009.
