Guadalest

Places to visit in and around Guadalest Spain

The historic hill fort of Guadalest is situated just 25km inland from the town of Benidorm. It is a major tourist attraction having been declared a 'Monument of Historical and Artistic Value' in 1974. It charms over 2 million visitors every year and is a truly spectacular sight – the remains of a medieval castle and village precariously perched on top of a mountain overlooking a reservoir.

  • Guadalest Car Park

    Parking: is in the pay car park, the ticket is valid for the whole day so you can spend as much time here as you want.

    From here: the shops, museums and restaurant are all around you, to enter the medieval village go through the tunnel in the rock.

    Top tip: entrance to the village is free, but there is a charge for the car park. The village is packed with craft and souvenir shops, independent museums, ancient buildings and restaurants as well as offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. 

  • Guadalest Museums

    Parking: is in the pay car park, the ticket is valid for the whole day so you can spend as much time here as you want.

    From here: the museums are all around you, to enter the medieval village go through the tunnel in the rock.

    • San Jose Castle: entrance charges apply, explore the castle ruins.
    • Casa Orduna: entrance charges apply, this is the main museum which is the house of the guardians of the castle and governors of the estate, it is set over four floors and is built into the rock face, the most interesting room is the library which houses 1265 books, 589 of which appear in the catalogue of the "Ancient Books" (1500–1800)!
    • Salt & Pepper Pots Museum: entrance charges apply, displays over 20,000 salt and pepper pots from around the world.
    • Dolls House Museum: entrance charges apply, many different dolls houses set over three floors.
    • Ethnological Museum: shows how people lived, what tools and implements they used and the clothes that they wore.
    • Microgigantic Museum: entrance charges apply, with the aid of magnifying glasses you can marvel at this miniature world and see such things as a flea riding a bicycle on the edge of a seed!
    • Miniature Museum: entrance charges apply, another museum of miniature marvels such as the statue of Liberty within the eye of a needle!
    • Medieval Torture Museum: entrance charges apply, barbaric medieval to almost present times instruments of torture and execution gathered from Europe. 
  • Historic Vehicles Museum

    Parking: is in the car park and is free.

    From here: entrance fee applies, enter the museum to enjoy the historic motor vehicles.

    Top tip: the museum contains over 100 motorcycles and several small cars from the 1920's to the 1970's which have been restored over the last 25 years. It is open everyday except Saturdays from 10.30-18.00 in the winter and 10.30-19.00 in the summer.

  • Reservoir with Solar Powered Boat

    Parking: is free and is on the side of the road, spaces are slightly limited so if it is busy you might have to park further away and walk.

    From here: follow the path through the trees to the jetty.

    Top tip: this boat operates from the beginning of May to the end of September from the little jetty, the boat holds upto 60 people. The journey covers a distance of 5km, lasts 50mins and cost 5€ per adult, its current timetable is displayed on the little board beside the jetty.

Polop

The mountains around Polop are one of many places to visit here.

The village of Polop is located inland in the Costa Blanca North in an area known as the Marina Alta. The local economy is based mainly on agriculture, so much of the surrounding countryside is covered in polythene to act as giant greenhouses.

    Parking: the streets in the village are very narrow and parking places are very limited, so it is best to park here on the waste ground.

    From here: walk down into the centre of the village, you'll see the zig zag path up to the castle to your left.

Denia

The marina is one of many places to visit in Denia Spain

Denia enjoys a privilege position right on the northern edge of the province of Alicante. It sits on the shores of the Mediterranean opposite the Balearic Islands and is backed by the impressive mountains of the the Montgo Natural park. Denia hosts many fiestas, but it is best know for the running of the bulls fiesta which takes place during July and has been declared as being of National Tourist Interest.

    Parking: is in the car park area and is free.

    From here: walk down to the beach.

    Top tip: there are lots of roads that lead down to the beach, all of which are signed 'Platja' so you can stop wherever you want. 

  • Denia Beach South End Playa de la Marineta Cassiana

    Parking: is in the marked spaces on the side of the road and is free.

  • Denia Car Park 1

    Parking: is in any of the spaces beside the road or in the large gravelled car park and is free.

    From here: walk through the old town to the castle, museums and main shopping street, or cross the road to for the sandy beach. 

  • Denia Castle

    Parking: this is the coordinate for the castle, parking is either in car park 1 or pay car park 2.

    From here: follow the signs to the Centre Historic and the Castillo.

    Top tip: the castle is open everyday except the 25th December and the 1st January. Times vary depending on the month, but are roughly 10.00-13.00 & 15.00-18.00 during the winter and 10.00-13.30 & 17.00-19.30 in the summer. Tickets are 3€ for adults and 1€ for children.


     

  • Denia Ferry Port

    Parking: this is the coordinate for the ferry terminal, parking is on the road anywhere you can find a space or use car park 1.

    From here: the ticket office is inside the ferry terminal or buy your ticket in advance from the travel agencies or online.

    Top tip: for timetables take a look at the official website 

  • Denia Fish Auction

    Parking: this is the coordinate for the fish auction, parking is in car park 1 and is free.

    From here: walk along the pier to the fish market known as the La Lonja.

    Top tip: you can watch the fish auction from the gallery inside the hall, it is held Monday-Friday 17.00. 

  • Denia Marina

    Parking: is either in the car park at the start of the marina, or if there are spaces beside the bars and restaurants in the marina.

    From here: walk to the marina along the road or along the elevated marina wall.  

  • Denia Market Medium Monday Morning

    Parking: is anywhere you can find a space in the roads close to the market site.

  • Denia Montgo Natural Park

    Parking: is in a small parking area on the side of the road and is free.

    From here: enter the park beside the information board and follow any of the marked trails.

    Top tip: the approach to the park is via a residential zone, there is also a lovely little chapel with a garden containing the stations of the cross near the entrance to the park at N38o49.145 E0o06.445.


     

  • Denia Pay Car Park 2

    Parking: is in the pay car park beside the tourist office, make sure you display your ticket in your car.

    From here: the tourist office is opposite the car park.

    Top tip: this is a pay and display car park with a maximum stay duration of 127 minutes.


     

  • Denia Running of the Bulls Pub

    Parking: his is the coordinate for the pub, parking is either in car park 1 or pay car park 2.

    From here: the pub which is completely dedicated to everything to do with bullfighting and the running of the bulls is right beside you. 

  • Denia Torre del Gerro Viewpoint

    Parking: small car park at dead end, alternatively park near the restaurant and walk the 150 meters to the viewpoint.

    From here: access the steep path up to the tower by walking up the road called Via Lactea and then follow the markers. 

  • Denia Tram Station

    Parking: is anywhere you can find a space in the streets around the tram station and is free. Do not park in the pay and display car park opposite the station as it has a maximum stay duration of 127 minutes.

    From here: enter the tram station and buy your ticket from the ticket office or ticket machine.

Balsicas

The village centre is one of many places to visit in and around Balsicas Spain

Balsicas is a relatively large village only 12 kilometres inland from the Mar Menor. The village contains a mixture of old and new, which means there is plenty to look at as you wander around, stopping in the lovely park and seeing the asymmetric church. There are two main attractions; Ros castle and a train station.

Trains run everyday from here; south to Torre Pacheco and Cartagena and north to the city of Murcia and beyond, all the way to France if you really want a long journey!!

  • Balsicas Ros Castle

    Parking: is in the street opposite the castle wall.

    From here: if the big iron and wooden gates are open, then the caretaker will be there, he loves to show people around but only speaks Spanish.

    Top tip: this is not an official tourist attraction, so does not have opening hours or entrance fee, it is just something to do if it is open!

  • Balsicas Train Station

    Main Stations along the line: east to Cartagena and west to Murcia.

    Parking: is in the streets around the train station and is free.

    From here: enter the train station and purchase your ticket.

    Top tip: this train line is used by various regional operators, but you can find the timetable using the Renfe website. Click on the word welcome to change the site to English, then in the drop down menus on the Departure select either Cartagena if you want to go to Murcia or Murcia if you want to go to Cartagena. In the drop down menu for Destination select the station that you are going to, select the date, then click search. To find the time that the train stops at Balsicas click on the train that you want in the Train/Route column and the time table will pop up. 

  • Balsicas Village Centre

Day Out Alicante City

Alicante City

Alicante is a city which has it all; a vibrant historic section with the Castle of Santa Barbara as it’s crowning glory, long fine sandy beaches, an impressive marina from where you can take the boat across to the Island of Tabarca or across the marina to the Panorama Centre, a great selection of boutiques, department stores and specialist shops, and many fiestas including the famous Hogueras or Bonfires around the end of June.

    From here: walk along the marina promenade towards the city centre, then follow our Alicante city walking route which incorporates a stop at the tourist office.

  • 3 Tourist Bus Stop One

    From here: exit car park, cross the road towards the beach and at the big roundabout you'll find Stop One for the Turi bus in Plaza del Mar.

  • 4 Castle Car Park

    Parking: is in the car park and is free.

    From here: wander around the castle at your leisure, there is no admission charge and it does not close for siesta, there is a small refreshment kiosk, toilets and picnic tables with stunning views out over the sea (go through the tunnel into the courtyard and turn left continue past the toilets for the picnic area).

  • 5 Alicante Football Stadium

    Hércules Club de Fútbol is based in Alicante. It was founded in 1922, and currently plays in the Spanish Second Division A, holding home matches at the Estadio José Rico Pérez, which seats 30,000 spectators.

    Season tickets: these range in price between 160€ and 395€. There is a 50% discount for children aged 5-14 yrs. For more information click here.

    Match tickets: the price depends on the position of the seat in the stadium, they start at 5€ and go upto 30€, but VIP seats are also available for 90€ each. You can buy your tickets for home games from the offices in the stadium, either in advance or from 2 hours before the start of the match on the day. 

    Fixture list: for all of the Second Division A teams click here or, for information about the next match take a look at the official Hércules Club de Fútbol website.

    Parking: is in the car park and is free. It gets very busy here on match days, so you might have to park anywhere you can find and walk.
