The tiny island of Tabarca is one of the top tourist destinations within the Costa Blanca. A visit here is just like stepping back in time, although it can feel quite crowded during the height of summer as over 4,000 people visit it daily! In 1986 the island and and its surrounding waters were declared a protected marina and bird reserve.

Boats to Tabarca leave from many points along the coastline including Benidorm, Alicante, Santa Pola, Guardamar and Torrevieja.

Places of Interest

  • 1 Santa Pola Marina Car Park

    Parking: is in the marina car park and is charged by the length of stay, keep your ticket and pay when you leave. Parking here will be relatively expensive if you are going to the island for the whole day. Free parking is available along the roads but spaces can be very hard to find, especially during holiday times.

    From here: exit the car park to the right and walk along beside the boats towards the fishing fleet, the boats for Tabarca depart from here.

    Places of interest and things to do at Santa Pola Marina

    • Boat Trips: there are several companies which offer trips to and from the Island. The prices and timetables for the big boats are displayed on the boards at the information hut, it is normally 14€ for adults and 10€ for children for the return journey which takes about half an hour. There are several independent 'taxi' boats which hold 6-10 people, negotiation with their captains is possible.
    • Restaurants: enjoy a cerveza or vino at any of these which can be found on either side of the marina.
  • 2 Isla Tabarca

    Parking: the island can only be reached by boat.

    From here: explore the Island, it is only 1750 metres long and 300 metres wide!

    Places of interest and things to do at Santa Pola Marina

    • Village Centre: with the old square at the heart, a few quaint 'streets' originate from here.
    • Old Fort: the walls and three of the gates houses still survive for you to wander around.
    • Church: this proudly guards the small harbour and successfully dwarfs all the other buildings.
    • Museum: for more information about the history of the island and its roll as a marine reserve.
    • Lighthouse: sitting on the uninhabited tip of the island it keeps watch over the sea.
    • Beaches and Coves: found all around the island, some are completely covered in seaweed, others are pebbled and few of the larger ones have sunbeds and sun umbrellas for hire.
    • Snorkelling: the sea around the island offers great snorkeling, so remember your snorkel & flippers!
    • Restaurants, Cafes and Bars: there is a vast array to choose from, they are slightly more expensive than usual about 20€ for a menu del dia, so you might want bring your own picnic.
  • Alicante Marina

    From here: this is the coordinate for the car park, exit the car park and walk along in front of the marina until you reach the little ticket hut and the moorings for the boats.

    • Boat Trips: are organised by Kontiki. They take about an hour and cost 18€ for the return trip. The timetables varies depending on the time of the year, so for the most up to date information it is best to take a look at their website.
    • Catamaran Trips: are arranged by Magic, part of MundoMarino. Take a look at their website for all the latest timetables and prices.
  • Benidorm Marina

    From here: this is the coordinate for the underground car park, exit the car park and walk back along the same road that you drove along to enter the car park, go straight on at the roundabout with the anchor on it and under the bridge to the Plaza de Hispanidad, then head down to the Levante beach. Once at the beach looking out to sea turn right, walk through the old town to the marina.

    • Boat Trips: Excursiones Marítimas offer trips to and from the Island of Tabarca. The prices and timetables vary depending on the time of the year, so check the boards and ask at the information hut or take a look at their website. It is normally 25€ for adults and 16€ for children for the return journey which takes about an hour and a half.

La Manga Strip

The coastline is one of many places to visit along the La Manga Strip Spain

The La Manga Strip is a piece of land that separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor. La Manga is Spanish for sleeve and aptly describes this 21 kilometre long, 300 metre wide spit. It is a great place to visit at any time of the year; during the summer when it is very busy or during the winter when it is very quiet, with most establishments being closed.

  • Beaches

    From here: there is a beach on either side of the Strip.

    Top tip: there are over 15 beaches along the length of the Strip, so stop anywhere you see a sign for ‘playa’, the sea is a lot warmer on the Mar Menor side than the Mediterranean side of the Strip. 

  • Boat Trip

    From here: at the roundabout just after the entrance arches turn right and park as close to the clubhouse at the end as you can, walk past the clubhouse and to the small jetty to catch the ferry.

    Top tip: the B&F Ferry to Santiago de la Ribera departs from the little jetty. During the summer it runs seven days a week from morning until midnight, but has a restricted service out of season. There is normally a notice board with the current timetable beside the jetty. The trip will take about 40 minutes and costs 4€ each way, under 7 years are free, it is an extra 1€ for a bicycle. 

  • High Street

Denia

The marina is one of many places to visit in Denia Spain

Denia enjoys a privilege position right on the northern edge of the province of Alicante. It sits on the shores of the Mediterranean opposite the Balearic Islands and is backed by the impressive mountains of the the Montgo Natural park. Denia hosts many fiestas, but it is best know for the running of the bulls fiesta which takes place during July and has been declared as being of National Tourist Interest.

  • Denia Castle

    From here: follow the signs to the Centre Historic and the Castillo.

    Top tip: the castle is open everyday except the 25th December and the 1st January. Times vary depending on the month, but are roughly 10.00-13.00 & 15.00-18.00 during the winter and 10.00-13.30 & 17.00-19.30 in the summer. Tickets are 3€ for adults and 1€ for children.


     

  • Denia Ferry Port

    From here: the pub which is completely dedicated to everything to do with bullfighting and the running of the bulls is right beside you. 

  • Denia Torre del Gerro Viewpoint

    Parking: small car park at dead end, alternatively park near the restaurant and walk the 150 meters to the viewpoint.

    From here: access the steep path up to the tower by walking up the road called Via Lactea and then follow the markers. 

  • Denia Tram Station

    Parking: is anywhere you can find a space in the streets around the tram station and is free. Do not park in the pay and display car park opposite the station as it has a maximum stay duration of 127 minutes.

Boat trips from the Costa Blanca South

As your My Travel Guide we have put together a selection of some of the boats trips that can be taken from the local area. Having such a beautiful coastline means that we have many excellent opportunities to enjoy one. There is nothing quite like being on a boat; the fresh air, sea breeze and the feeling of relaxing and 'getting away from it all'. The views from the boat back towards the coastline provide a different perspective as well as a stack of photo opportunities. Of course there is also the novelty of it!

  • Isla de Tabarca

    From here: exit the car park to the right and walk along beside the boats towards the fishing fleet, the boats for Tabarca depart from here. Once on the Island explore, it is only 1750 metres long and 300 metres wide!

    Top tip: Santa Pola is the closest marina to the Isla de Tabarca, so it has the shortest journey time of about 30 minutes.

  • Los Narejos Boat Trip

    Parking: is beside the road and is free, it gets busy here so if you can’t find a space try using any of the side streets.

    From here: walk down onto the beach and towards the wooden jetty from where the boats depart.

    Top tip: (info correct for 2011) the boat trip around the Islands of the Mar Menor departs on a Monday & Wednesday at 10.40 & 17.40 and on a Friday & Saturday 10.40, it costs 11€. The trip to the Island Grosa on the other side of the La Manga Strip departs on a Friday at 17.40 only and costs 11€. Both journeys last about 2 hours.

  • Santa Pola Boat Trips

  • Santiago de la Ribera Boat Trip

    From here: if you are in the free car park 1 walk towards the large white building at one end of the car park, you'll see a roundabout ahead, walk past this and straight on down to the beach, then walk along the promenade to the Escuela Piragüismo (Kayaking school) large white building on the shores of the Mar Menor, opposite the Hotel Ribera. The wooden pier behind the kayaking school is where the B&F Ferry departs.

    Top tip: (info correct for 2010) A single ticket costs 4€ and a return is 8€ per person, it is free for all under fours! You can put a bicycle on the ferry for an additional 1€ each way. The ferry departs Santiago every 2 hours starting at 11.30 and finishing at 21.30. It departs La Manga every 2 hours starting at 10.30 and finishing at 20.30. In the summer (March-November) it goes every day of the week, but during the winter it does not operate on a Sunday. In the height of summer the operating hours are extended for another 4 hours at the end of the day, making the last ferry depart Santiago at 01.00! For more information please call (0034) 649 201 610, there is usually someone who speaks a little English to answer your questions. 

  • Torrevieja Boat Trips

    Parking: is in the pay car park 1 and is charged by the length of stay, keep your ticket and pay when you are ready to leave. Free parking is available on the roads around this area, but spaces are very hard to find.

    From here: make your way towards the boat warehouses beside the car park and opposite the submarine, the boats to Island of Tabarca depart from here.

    Top tip: The cruise lasts approximately 45 minutes and opperates daily from March to November. There is a notice board beside the boat that displays the most up-to-date time table. Return tickets cost 21€ for adults, 10€ for children aged 5 to 10 years and it is free for children under 5. The restaurants on the Island are very expensive, so it is best to pack a picnic.

Santiago de la Ribera

Santiago de la Ribera is a lovely town that sits on the shores of the Mar Menor. It started life as a simple fishing village, then grew into the prime holiday destination for wealthy Murcians. Today Santiago is popular with the Spanish for their vacations but also attracts tourists from all over Europe and although it has a modern air, it has still maintained its ‘fishing village’ atmosphere.

Los Alcazares is situated right on the shores of the Mar Menor. It is very seasonal as it has a resident population of about 12,000 which increases to about 100,000 during the summer!!

    Top tip: Golf Delux is a miniature golf course, the holes have been reduced to a maximum of 100 meters but still contain all the normal hazards like streams and ponds, hills, fences, bunkers and pebbles. Prices including all equipment are 7€ for adults 7€ and 5€ for under 16’s. The centre is open 7 days a week from 10.00am until late. The trip to the Island Grosa on the other side of the La Manga Strip departs on a Friday at 17.40 only and costs 11€. Both journeys last about 2 hours.

    From here: walk towards the entrance for the Alfonso Park which was created to stop the town from becoming buried in the sand. There are many paths through the park and it is great for a walk, cycle or picnic.

    Parking tip: if it is really busy try the pay car park, look at the town hall then walk down the road to the right of the building towards the sea, past the Reina Sofia Park, the entrance to the Alfonso Park is on the left.

    Top tip: you can walk through the Alfonso Park all the way to the marina and back along the beach.

    Top tip: visit during the evening in the summer, it is open until midnight, and enjoy the close by night market and children's funfair, even have a stroll on the moonlit beach.

  • Guardamar del Segura Rio Segura Walking Cycling Route

    Parking: is in the Marina and costs 1€ for however long you want to stay, insert coin on entrance and scan ticket on exit. Or to miss out the 2 kilometres of pavement join the path at the towns entrance by the roundabout with the waterfall fountain on it that you pass to get to the marina. To find the path walk or cycle under the bridge keeping the river on your right.

    From here: walk or cycle along the banks of the Rio Segura (pavement for first 2 kilometres then it changes to hard ground). The path goes past Rojales, Formentera, Algorfa and Benejuzar and finishes 30 kilometres away in Orihuela. This route can be done as one long journey from Guardamar to Orihuela or you can use the villages as starting/stopping points.

    Top tip: go with friends and two cars, leave one car in the village where you want to finish and one at the start!!

  • Guardamar del Segura Tourist Office

Santa Pola

The beach is one of many places to visit in Santa Pola Spain

Santa Pola is a busy town which is best known for its salt lakes that produce salt for use on the roads and more recently as a great destination for kite surfers.

It has endless kilometres of beach front promenades and a modern marina from which you can take a boat trip to the nearby Island of Tabarca. The town boasts a castle, a palm park, an aquarium and an interesting range of cultural and historic museums. Fish lovers will enjoy the many fish restaurants, or you can buy some fresh fish to cook for yourself from the fish market when the boats return with their catch!

  • Dive Academy Santa Pola

    The Dive Academy is owned and run by Damon Rose, he has been a master instructor since 1998. The Academy is based at the beautiful marina in Santa Pola where they have a shop selling all things dive related, offices and boat which the academy uses for taking you out to sea! The Dive Academy is a BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) training Centre as well as holding a PADI 5 Star status. 

    There are many different packages available, so it is best to check the Dive Academy's own website for the most up to date information or better still call into the shop at the marina for a chat. The packages, dive sites and experiences have been specially designed and we know that they will be enjoyed by all!

    Examples of Packages

    If you have never dived before why not try the half day Snorkel Safari, it is a great day out for the whole family! All you need to bring is your swimming costume, towel and smile and we will take care of everything else. You will have a presentation on the marine life you will be seeing and a brief explanation on how to snorkel safely. Then it is into the sea for a fun packed hour or two of Snorkelling around Tabarca island!!

    If you want to go out into the deep blue then start with The PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience. It is a fantastic way to be introduced to the amazing underwater world which is only accessible on scuba!

    For the more ambitious and already qualified there are the Scuba Diver 1 day course, Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Diver and many other Specialist courses and experiences.

  • Santa Pola Coastal Walk

    From here: walk along the promenade with the sea on your left and start the walk beside the information board. This walk along the 'rural beaches' takes about 2 hours, you can follow the markers on the dunes or walk along the 'rural beaches'. You'll pass the remains of a salt transporting boat, two civil war shelters, the inlet channel and then ultimately the outlet channel for the salt lagoons, where the walk ends.

    Top tip: these 'rural beaches' are excellent for kite surfing, the wind is normally best in the afternoon, so time your walk accordingly!

  • Santa Pola Fishing Marina & Fish Market
