El Hondo Nature Park

There are lots of things to do in the El Hondon Nature Park

El Hondo (also confusingly known as El Fondo) has been a Nature Park since 1988 and is on the RAMSAR wetlands conservation lists and is classified as a Special Protection Area for Birds, or ZEPA. This park is part of what used to be the Elche Lagoon, almost completely drained from the 18th century onwards. Today there are two controlled reservoirs around which form a series of ponds and salt marshes and these in turn are surrounded by fields and palm plantations, making it a pretty place to visit at any time of the year.

La Mata

The wooden promenade is one of many places to visit in La Mata Spain

La Mata is a traditional seaside village which has managed to retain a lot of its charm and character. The square is at the heart of the village and is easily recognised by round watch tower beside the sea. A lovely variety of bars, cafes and restaurants are to be found in the village and also along the beach. La Mata is a really great place to visit for a picnic in the Waterwheel Park, a stroll on the wooden walkway south to Torrevieja or a walk along the beach north to Guardamar.
