Last month unemployment in Spain fell by 76,223
The number of registered unemployed fell by 76,223 last month – a fall of 1.84% compared to the previous month.
The total number of registered unemployed in Spain now stands at 4,066,202 according to the latest figures released by the Ministry for Work. Nevertheless despite the second consecutive monthly fall in unemployment the total number of registered unemployed in May was still 446,000 more than a year ago.
According to the General Secretary for Employment, Maravillas Rojo, the fall in unemployment in May, a traditionally good month for employment with the start of the tourist season in Spain, these latest figures are ‘without doubt good results especially if the state of the economy is taken into account’. Furthermore, it is the biggest fall in unemployment registered in the month of May for five years.
So it is good news at last!
Holiday spending money goes the furthest in…
Travel Mole, the industry website for Tourism had a very interesting article written by Bev Fearis all about where holiday spending money goes the furthest according to Thomas Cook. And guess what, Spain is in the top three of the best value destinations!!
‘Costs have dropped in a number of locations, including mainland Spain, the Canaries and Balearic Islands. Daily costs in Morocco, meanwhile, come to just £29.42 – nearly £20 cheaper than the UK.

Thomas Cook UK & Ireland chief executive Ian Derbyshire said: “The fantastic news for travellers this year is that the cost of everyday essentials have gone down in many resorts so those looking to enjoy themselves on excursions and evening entertainment will be able to do exactly that.
“Medium haul destinations like Turkey and Egypt are still extremely good value compared to the UK, and with holidaymakers having the option of all-inclusive packages, daily expenses are being cut down even further.”
So it looks like – we’re all going on a summer holiday!!
The coast becomes state protected land
Alex Watkins reported in the Costa Blanca News this week that the coast of Guardamar del Segura, San Fulgencio, and Torrevieja officially became state protected land on May 27.
The Alicante provincial bulletin (BOP) published that the area stretches from the border with Elche to the Laguna de la Mata canal, apart from the mouth of the River Segura. It covers over 650 hectares of sand dunes and pine forest.
On March 12 the ministry of the environment’s coast and sea sustainability department authorised the provincial coastal service to officially mark out the boundaries of the area and a protected perimeter. For the next month, the provisional boundary plans can be viewed and appealed against at the provincial coastal service offices, Plaza del Montañeta, 9, Alicante, during office hours.
What to do 30/05/10
Oaky, so I did it again, gave away the ‘what we did last week’ in the photo of the week!! But for those of you who missed that blog post, Dave and I spent some time on the tranquil shores of the Mar Menor.
We parked at Los Narejos, the north beach of the town of Los Alcazares and took a stroll along the promenade. It was a beautiful clear morning, so we could easily see the islands in the middle of the Mar Menor and across to the famous La Managa strip. The waters were so still and the beach relatively uncrowded as the season is just beginning.
We had a really relaxing morning strolling along the promenade and then enjoyed a spot of tapas (no fish for Dave though!!) at the trendy beach bar with its chill out music. We whiled away the afternoon on the beach with the occasional dip into the water for a bit of a cool down. And all day we were momentarily interrupted by the roar from the engines of the planes that were descending and ascending from the runway at the near by San Javier airport.

We were down on the Mar Menor at the weekend – but less of that otherwise I’ll give too much away before the ‘what we got up to this week’ blog post comes out!! – and I just had to take a photo of the pedalos.
It normally goes something like… when I was a kid the pedalos were the best think since sliced bread….. but I have to say that they have managed to improve the pedalo!!! They seem to have added a child friendly slide.
This is quiet simply great!! Whilst Mum and Dad are pedaling away like fury, the children are enjoying their very own mobile slide. So now a trip on the pedalo doesn’t just wear the peddler out, but the passengers too!!
